Is This the First Perfect EV? – Our Look at the BYD Dolphin Surf

If you’re new to electric cars or just EV-curious, then you’ll want to check out BYD’s latest offering: the Dolphin Surf. We got our hands on one for a first look, and trust us, it’s small, smart, surprisingly stylish, and packed with features you’d expect on a car double the price.

We took it for a spin at Alexandra Palace and frankly it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it might just be the perfect second car, city run around or learner-friendly EV

What Is the BYD Dolphin Surf?

The Dolphin Surf is the sixth model BYD has launched in the UK and by far their most compact. But don’t let the size fool you – this thing is practical, playful and tech-filled.

At first glance, you get subtle hints of sportiness (some are even calling it the “baby Lambo” – we’ll let you be the judge). It’s taller than the standard Dolphin, slightly shorter, but cleverly designed to maximise space.

Why We Think It’s a Game-Changer for New EV Drivers

This car is aimed squarely at real people from student drivers to families who need a reliable second vehicle.

  • Packed with features: Apple CarPlay, a rotating 10.1” screen, vegan leather, and BYD’s Blade Battery tech all come as standard in the mid-spec version.
  • Ridiculously affordable: Starting at just £269 a month on PCP, it’s one of the most accessible EVs on the UK market right now.
  • Vehicle-to-load magic: You can literally power your gadgets or even retro arcade games straight from the car. Ideal for glamping or emergencies!

Surprising Practicality

Despite its compact footprint, the Dolphin Surf’s boot offers 308 litres of space. That’s plenty of room for the weekly shop, a dog bed, or even a few bags for a weekend trip.

Inside, it’s airy and comfy, with decent rear legroom, a flat floor for better foot placement, and clever use of space throughout.

How Does It Drive?

Short answer: like a dream.

  • Instant electric torque gives you the zip you need off the lights.
  • Auto-steer and advanced safety tech make it a confidence booster for new or cautious drivers.
  • It’s got a tight turning circle, ideal for urban streets and multi-storey car parks.

And yes, it’s fun. Really fun. We even got a little wheelspin (legally, of course).

So, Should You Watch the Full Review?

We think so. Whether you’re shopping for your first EV, helping your kid choose their first car, or just want to see what all the fuss is about — this is one of the most fun and useful EVs we’ve ever tested.
