Here are 5 top tips to make your electric vehicle charging experience seamless.

As myself (Ric a.k.a SustainableDad) and my Cameraman Callum take a trip up to Fully Charged North we reached out to Chief Paua Ranger Niall Riddell for some valuable insights.

So, whether you’re a first-time EV owner or looking to optimise your charging routine, this post is for you. Let’s get started!

Tip 1: Charge When You Don’t Have To

Niall suggests taking your EV out for a charge even when you might not necessarily need it, Just like you would take a car on a test drive. Take your EV on a test charge. This can help alleviate the stress of your first-time charging experience. By familiarizing yourself with the charging process in a relaxed setting, you’ll gain confidence and peace of mind for future charging sessions.

Tip 2: Start with a Full Battery

It’s always a good idea to start your journey with a full battery. By ensuring your EV is fully charged, you eliminate any concerns about running out of power prematurely. Plus, starting with a full battery provides a cushion for unforeseen detours or extended driving conditions, giving you more flexibility on the road.

Tip 3: Have a Plan B in Place

Don’t wait until your battery is nearly depleted to start looking for a charging station. Always have a plan B in mind, so you can confidently reach your destination without the anxiety of finding a suitable charging point last minute. Prioritize researching charging stations along your route, and consider alternative options in case one is out of service. Another good thing about an Electric Car is you do not have to worry about ULEZ.

Tip 4: Make Short Top-Ups on Longer Journeys

For longer road trips, it’s recommended to make shorter top-ups every 60 to 90 minutes. Not only does this ensure your battery stays adequately charged, but it also serves as a refreshing break for you. These regular stops allow you to stretch your legs, grab a snack, or simply enjoy the surroundings. Remember, it’s all about balancing comfort and efficient charging.

Tip 5: Time Your Charging with Other Activities

To maximize your time and convenience, Niall advises waiting until you need to stop for other reasons, such as using the restroom or grabbing a meal, to charge your vehicle. Combining charging sessions with necessary breaks optimizes your schedule and minimizes downtime. So, the next time you plan to take a pit stop, why not charge your EV simultaneously and make the most of your time on the road?

In a nutshell

There you have it – five valuable tips from Niall to enhance your EV charging experience. By following these suggestions, you can eliminate the stress of charging, stay prepared with a full battery, have alternate plans in place, and optimize your charging routine during longer journeys. With these strategies in your arsenal, you’ll be cruising along the roads in your electric vehicle with ease and confidence. Stay charged and stay green! Have a good one everyone and happy motoring.
