The UK EV and hybrid market is moving fast. And this week, at a suitably cinematic launch at Longcross Studios, Geely Auto UK officially unveiled its first plug-in hybrid for Britain: the Starray EM-i.
After launching the all-electric X5 just three months ago, Geely is clearly wasting no time building momentum here in the UK. But the Starray EM-i isn’t just “another PHEV”. According to the team on stage, it’s a car that’s been designed from the ground up to be what they call a “born super hybrid.”
Here’s what that actually means – and whether it could be a smart stepping stone into electric driving for UK families.
Who are Geely
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (ZGH) is a Chinese privately-held automotive group that entered the automotive industry in 1997. Never heard of them? You and many others. But they own a diverse portfolio of global brands, including Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, Proton, Zeekr, and Lynk & Co. Watch this space…
A Big UK Ambition
Speaking at the launch, UK Managing Director Michael Yang outlined how quickly the brand has grown since arriving in Britain. In just three months:
- Retail sites have doubled from 25 to over 50
- Eight of the top ten UK dealer groups are now partnered
- The cars are listed on Motability
- UK owner communities are already active and feeding back real-world data
By 2030, Geely aims to:
- Sell 100,000 cars per year in the UK
- Launch at least 10 new models
- Offer a fully electrified line-up
Ambitious? Yes. But the numbers globally are strong. Geely Holding Group reported over 4 million global sales last year, with more than half coming from new energy vehicles.
The Starray EM-i is clearly central to that UK growth strategy.
What Is “Born Super Hybrid”?
Most plug-in hybrids start life as petrol cars and then have batteries squeezed in later. That often means:
- Smaller boots
- Transmission tunnels eating into rear legroom
- Slower DC charging
Geely says the Starray EM-i is different. It sits on the brand’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture – a platform designed for electrification from day one .
That brings some real-world advantages:
- Flat floor
- No boot compromise
- Hybrid-dedicated engine
- DC fast charging capability
For families looking at their first electrified car, that’s a big deal.
According to Mark Blundell, Chief Marketing Officer – Geely Auto UK:
“This isn’t just another entry in the new energy market. It’s a product that shows what can be achieved when you create vehicles that have been designed and built to plug in — or, as we like to say, a car that is born super hybrid”
Range and Charging: The Headline Numbers
There are two battery options:
18.4 kWh Battery
- Up to 51 miles electric-only range
- 585 miles combined range
- 30–80% DC charge in 20 minutes (30kW)
29.8 kWh Battery
- Up to 84 miles electric-only range
- 618 miles combined range
- DC charging up to 60kW
For context, the average UK commute is around 20 miles per day. So in theory, many drivers could complete most weekday journeys purely on electric power, plugging in overnight at home.
That’s where this kind of car makes sense. You get meaningful EV range for daily life, but still have petrol backup for long motorway drives or school holiday trips to Cornwall.
Driving Modes
There are three main modes:
Pure Mode – electric only
Hybrid Mode – engine and motor working together
Power Mode – maximum performance
It’s clearly designed to appeal to drivers who aren’t quite ready to go fully electric but don’t want to feel like they’re clinging to old tech either.
Safety: Fast Reactions and 5-Star Credentials
Safety was a big talking point on stage.
Highlights include:
- 5-star Euro NCAP rating
- Power cut in 5 milliseconds during impact
- Fuel cut in 10 milliseconds
- 540-degree panoramic camera system
- Level 2 driver assistance systems
The platform keeps electric and fuel systems separated via dedicated routing channels – a reassuring detail if you’re new to hybrid tech.
Space and Practicality (The Dad Test)
For The Sustainable Dad audience, space matters.
The Starray EM-i offers:
- 528-litre boot
- Expands to 2,065 litres with seats down
- Flat floor layout
- Generous rear leg and headroom
That puts it firmly in family SUV territory.
Add in heated seats, a panoramic roof (on higher trims), and a 16-speaker Flyme audio system, and it’s clearly targeting the “premium but sensible” buyer.
Pricing and Finance
UK pricing starts at:
- £29,990 (Pro)
- £32,690 (Max)
- £34,990 (Ultra)
Launch offers include:
- 0% APR
- From £339 deposit and £339 per month (Pro example)
- For a large, tech-heavy plug-in hybrid with 80+ miles of EV range, in my opinion that’s competitive positioning.
Geely Care Plus: Warranty and Support
One thing that often holds new brands back is trust.
Geely announced “Geely Care Plus”, which includes:
- 8-year vehicle warranty for new energy vehicles
- 75,000 sq ft UK parts distribution centre
- Over 50 service locations
- Four years’ roadside assistance
Early software issues were also acknowledged – and reportedly resolved via rapid over-the-air updates .
Transparency like that goes a long way.
So… Who Is This For?
The Starray EM-i feels aimed squarely at:
- Families not quite ready for full EV
- High-mileage drivers nervous about charging infrastructure
- Company car users wanting electric commuting without full EV dependency
- Households with driveway charging but regular long trips
In many ways, it’s a transitional product. A stepping stone into electrified driving.
And with up to 84 miles of real electric range, it’s far more than the token 20–30 mile PHEVs we’ve seen in the past.
Final Thoughts from a Sustainable Dad Perspective
I would NEVER go back to a petrol car, partly due to the fact I can charge at home and it costs me about £4 to fill up my EV. BUT, if you can’t charge at home and you’re driving hundreds of miles everyday, this kind of plug-in hybrid could genuinely cut your fuel bill and emissions dramatically.
But – and it’s an important but – the real savings only happen if you plug it in.
Used properly, the Starray EM-i could offer the best of both worlds:
- Electric school runs and commutes
- Silent and emission free zipping around town
- No range anxiety on longer journeys.
- London to the Alps… NO problemo.
In fact, here’s how I did it with my family, in the all electric Polestar 4.
The big question now is how it drives in the real world.
And you can bet we’ll be getting it properly tested – boot space, charging speeds, family practicality and performance.
Would you go full EV now… or does a long-range plug-in hybrid like this feel like the smarter move?
If you are ready to go FULL EV… Geely have you covered with EX5, which is very similar in spec and pricing.
