The All-New Tesla Model Y: Is This the UK’s Best Family EV?

The newly updated Tesla Model Y is here, and it’s already turning heads. With smarter tech, improved design and plenty of family-friendly touches, I took it on a proper test drive to find out if it really is the ultimate electric car for families.

From school runs and long motorway drives to a family camping trip, the Model Y faced it all. And to make things interesting, my mate Luke joined with his older Model Y so we could see how much has really changed.

Fully Charged with myenergi zappi

We set off early, coffee in hand and the car fully charged overnight with the myenergi zappi home charger. There’s something brilliant about unplugging in the morning knowing you’ve powered your journey using clean, renewable energy.

Heading out of London towards Bristol, the Model Y immediately impressed me. The drive was smooth, quiet and comfortable, and Tesla’s Autopilot made the long motorway stretches feel beautifully effortless.

What’s New in the 2025 Model Y

The latest Juniper Launch Edition includes: a 78.4 kWh battery, offering up to 353 miles of range (WLTP), 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and 250 kW rapid charging that takes you from 10 to 80 percent in around 27 minutes.

The facelift has divided opinion. The redesigned front lights and lack of a Tesla badge give it a more futuristic look, though not everyone’s a fan. Still, it’s modern, clean and in my opinion, distinctly Tesla.

Minimalist Inside, but More Refined

Inside, the minimalist layout continues, with almost everything controlled via the central touchscreen. The build quality feels much improved, and the return of a physical indicator stalk is a welcome move.

One controversial change is the gear selector, now controlled by swiping on the screen. It’s a clever idea, but one that takes a little time to get used to. For Luke, this was a deal-breaker, but would this stop you?

A Quick Charging Stop

A few hours down the M4, I stopped at Leigh Delamere Services for a coffee and a quick charge. The Tesla Supercharger network remains one of the biggest perks of owning a Tesla. No apps, no fuss – just plug in, stretch your legs, grab a drink, and by the time you’re back, you’ve added miles of range.

Can It Handle Family Life?

After a shoot in Bristol, it was time for the ultimate test: Packing up for a camping trip. Tents, sleeping bags, snacks, two kids and a mountain of gear but I’m pleased to say that the Model Y handled it all with ease.

With an 822-litre boot, extra underfloor storage and a front trunk (frunk/froot), there’s plenty of space for family adventures. Once we reached the South Downs, the drive was peaceful and the kids were more than happy thanks to the rear entertainment screen and Tesla Arcade.

Everyday Practicality with Smart Tech

Tesla has packed the Model Y with features designed for families. Highlights include Dog Mode (keeping pets safe and cool while parked), streaming and gaming apps for charging stops, and a clever camera system with blind-spot monitoring for extra safety.
It genuinely feels like an iPhone on wheels – whether that’s a compliment or a warning is up to you.

Final Verdict

The new Tesla Model Y remains one of the best all-round electric cars for families. It’s fast, practical, efficient and easy to live with. The design tweaks and touchscreen gear selector might divide opinion, but overall it’s an impressive package.

Pair it with the myenergi zappi for clean, affordable home charging and you’ve got a setup that’s both sustainable and perfectly suited to family life.

From school runs to road trips, the Model Y proves that driving electric can fit seamlessly into everyday adventures – with zero tailpipe emissions and a whole lot of fun.
